Carmel Impact is committed to creating lasting, positive change in Timor-Leste. We believe that access to education is the pathway towards a better life and career opportunities. It is this belief that drives us to support three schools in the Zumalai region of Timor-Leste.
Every child in Timor-Leste deserves a quality education.
Education equals freedom. Carmel Impact is working hard to build a future where Timor-Leste’s ongoing cycle of poverty can finally be broken. Education is the key to opportunity and community transformation. In line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Quality Education for all, we facilitate programs to ensure even the most underprivileged in Timor have access to education.
Helping children and young adults reach their true potential
Carmel Impact works together with local communities at a grass roots level to transform lives through education. Together with our supporters, we offer life changing programs that help children and young people reach their potential.
Through our scholarship programs, Catholic Schools, and boarding house, children and young adults from even the most remote villages can access primary school, high school, university, and vocational training courses. These young people have the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to harness a positive future for their families, their communities, and their nation.
Catholic Schools
Carmel Impact supports three Catholic Schools in the Zumalai region on the southern coast of Timor-Leste. Our schools educate hundreds of students from this rural, impoverished region. With your assistance, we offer subsidies for volunteer teachers, deliver teacher training, source critically needed educational resources, and provide school building maintenance.
Boarding House
Enabling access to life-changing education beyond primary school is challenging for children in rural areas who at times need to walk hours to reach the nearest junior high school. We knew we had to find a solution to make sure distance doesn’t limit educational opportunities for children from outlying villages. With help from our generous supporters, Carmel Impact built the Beato Tito Brandsma College Boarding House in Zumalai. Since 2015, over 70 young people have resided at our boarding house throughout their entire education at our schools.
Scholarships
Carmel Impact offers two scholarship programs – Community Scholarships and La Bruna Scholarships (Carmelite Students).
Community Scholarships provide local youth with opportunities to attend junior and secondary schools, vocational training, and tertiary programs. The program improves their standard of education and increases their prospects for future employment.
La Bruna Scholarships provide young men access to higher learning opportunities in Philosophy, English, and postgraduate studies to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Community Scholarships
Carmel Impact’s Community Scholarship program provides young Timorese with opportunities to attend junior and secondary schools, vocational training, and tertiary studies. We support marginalised and vulnerable children who are poor, orphaned, or have special needs. Many children who attempt to study at secondary schools drop out due to a lack of funds or challenging family circumstances. With your help, we can assist more children overcome these challenges and escape a life of poverty and hardship.
La Bruna Scholarships
La Bruna Scholarships offer tertiary education and training to highly motivated young men so they can deliver pastoral care to traumatised communities, or work in leadership roles across the wider Timorese society. Upon graduation, whether becoming a pastoral practitioner or returning to a leadership role in their community, these caring and compassionate men can be found working closely alongside people, supporting them through both good and challenging times.
